The rule of halves...

We came into this process thinking 1 in 3 eggs would be good. When we only got 8 out we hoped for better odds. 4 of the 8 seem to have fertilized 'normally' (not sure if the other four didn't fertilize at all or if 24-hours in they just didn't look good). Eitherway we are now working with half of our original haul.

We will hear back tomorrow about how they are progressing. We are still hoping for a 5-day transfer but at this point I guess we are really just hoping for a transfer. Since egg quality seems to have been the issue all along, we weren't expecting tons of eggs, but we were hoping that those that were plucked would be good. Go good eggs, go!

At least at this point it feels very out of our hands, and that does feel like a bit of a relief.
So, of you've been through this process what can you say about a 3 v a 5 day transfer??

  1. We just did a 3 day and I wanted a 5 day. There are so many different opinions about this. Some people think that it's best to wait til day 5 based on "only the strong survive". Others seem to think that embryos thrive better in the womb hence a 3 day. We had 23 eggs-15 fertilized and transferred 2 on day 3.We were told that our eggs looked great and all of them were still going on day 4, but by day 6 ONLY 3 made it to blast to freeze! So it really is a crap shoot! Good Luck! I'll be sending good vibes your way!

  2. Came across your blog the other day. We are a queer family in atlanta (also seems like we have other similarities-one phd, one prof, we used to live in Boston, one of us grew up in NYC, and our daughter is two as well). Anyways- our daughter was the result of a two egg five day transfer and our twins due in may will be the result of a three egg, three day transfer....we stressed over the 3 day v 5 day and to be honest, I don't really think it makes a huge difference,

  5. hey, i've been following along but unable to post from my iphone while we were out on the cape! was SO relieved you were able to go in for your retrieval with all the boston chaos.

as you know, we have a ridiculous amount of experience with this issue. i was adamant that we have a 5-day transfer last time, but that was for very specific reasons. i made a lot of eggs, but knew because i was 40 that most of them would not be good. it didn't make sense to me to guess which 2 or 3 out of the 12+ eggs would be the best on day 3; it seemed much more logical to weed out the lesser embryos and go to day 5. but this was only because i had a lot to choose from and was very confident that enough would survive for a 5-day transfer. if i'd had 4 on day 2, i would have gone for a 3-day transfer of 3 embryos. or at 40 after 2 failed IVFs i might have done all 4 of them...but that was my case. but with only 4 embryos, while you still have a good shot of one or more of them resulting in a pregnancy, there's no benefit in keeping them in the lab 2 extra days. if you want an opinion from someone who's thought about this a LOT, i would suggest you go for a 3-day transfer of at least 2 if not 3 if you are concerned about egg quality. of course, you have to be prepared for twins if you do that. w has had a chemical and a miscarriage, so i think you're smart to be more aggressive. of course, i say this after taking a very big risk with a 5-day transfer of 3 blasts, and getting lucky that exactly 1 stuck, so i was a case of being more aggressive working out great, though it might have gone differently and then i might have a different story.

whatever you decide, i'm cheering for you all!

  6. I did a day 5 transfer but my friend just did a day 3 transfer and pushed for day 5 but they wouldnt. She had 10 good embryos at transfer and they transfered 2 but by day 5 the other 8 died. So it was great they made her do a day 3. She is now pregnant with one baby so it was best for those embryos to be in the uterus obviously!!
