First off, thanks to all for the well-wishes and comments with advice. After a pretty horrible 72 hours -- all is well! The "contractions" stopped around 3am two nights ago and since then Ive slowed the puking down to once or twice a day and managed to keep a whole bagel down yesterday! We drove back to Boston yesterday in record time (no traffic and salted roads, yeah!) and met with the midwives this morning and.....
(drum roll for dramatic effect)
it turns out they weren't even practice contractions. Mostly likely the crazy amount of pain I was in, back-spasms and vomiting every 2-3 hours was entirely due to severe dehydration, exacerbated by said puking and lack of sleep.
Moral of the story to all of your out there = DRINK UP and stay hydrated.
I generally drink about 10 - 12 8oz glasses of water a day and eat pretty regularly (every 2-3 hours). Throughout this whole pregnancy Ive had alot of nausea so not worried too much about 1x-2x a-day of vomiting - But somehow the holiday "excitement" threw my schedule off and pitched us into a downward spiral of worse and worse nausea, leading to more and more dehydration.
We are now armed with prescription-grade anti-reflux pills and anti-nausea meds as well as a CASE of coconut water (thanks, Ruby!). Between that, the electrolyte water and a strict regime of hourly drinking/peeing, I hope we are set for a relatively calm 4-5 weeks.
And according to our midwife, its a HUGE relief to know that contractions wont even be that bad (!!). That said, now we have practiced getting through really hard parts -- we are a well oiled hypno-birth machine -- or something like that :)
After 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night we both feel like a million bucks and are hoping that (aside from the normal 'aches and pains' of being 9 months prego) we can remain this way for a few more weeks.
[end drama!]

I feel there should be a cheering chorus at the end of this post. Glad to hear things are on the mend and it’s great that you can take gaining practice out of the experience. Here's to 4-5 weeks drama free and a little one in your very near future.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are back on track, but I can't IMAGINE going through that with nothing but a bunch of puke to deal with! Thank goodness you know what was going on, though-- and now you will be happily prepared when the showtime comes!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the baby's doing well, now don't forget to take care of her mother and stay hydrated!
ReplyDeleteThat is some crazy dehydration! Glad to hear you've gotten regulated again and all is well. Hope the next few weeks are drama free!
